Video: YahZarah- The Tickler.

YahZarah is the perfect reason for why people need to wake up. There's a whole different world out there. It's called good music. Discover it. Live it. Breathe it. Share it.

There is no word on a set release date for her upcoming project, The Ballad of Purple St. James, but keep your eyes open.

Video: Yahzarah Covers Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."

Below is the video of Yahzarah singing her own version of Michael's "Billie Jean" at the Soul Sista Summit. It's guaranteed to leave you speechless. (Better than anyone at the disgrace of a BET Awards could have done). R.I.P. Michael Jackson.

Conya Doss + Sy Smith + Maya Azucena at Soul Sista Serenade.

The flier says it all. This is another show you don't want to miss. If you're one of the lucky ones attending, record lots of videos. And to be honest, I'm not familiar with the name Maya Azucena. I did a little research on YouTube and found several great performances. Check out one below. (she's one to keep your eyes on).

New Music from YahZarah.

Ms. Purple St. James has been working on her new album for some time now. The Ballad of Purple St. James currently has a release date of June 24th. Ever since the release of her album BlackStar, I've been head-over-heels for her. YahZarah brings something new to soul music. Something you just can't get enough of.

Last year, she released an EP entitled The Prelude which consisted of songs that were very different than those on Blackstar. Other than the two albums, YahZarah has created music with The Foreign Exchange, Apple Juice Kid, Camp Lo, and Raheem DeVaughn. Everytime I hear her voice on a song, it lifts my mood. She never disappoints.

Not too long ago, a few new songs surfaced. Hopefully they'll be on her upcoming album. "The Tickler" and "Radio" have two completely different sounds . The former going more in the reggae direction and the latter going in a more upbeat, hip-hop/soul direction. Listen to both below.

You can never go wrong with new YahZarah.

Yahzarah Interview With T.I.R.M.

In the interview, Yahzarah talks about her musical influences, her first record, "Purple St. James," and her upcoming album (which should be coming in MAY), and a lot more. Check it out on T.I.R.M..

Purple St. James (Yahzarah) Self Released Album "The Prelude"

Good evening people. Yahzarah, or now known as Purple St. James has a new EP out. That's how I missed it. She has a new persona named Purple St. James. Her first new album in years, it is a departure from what she has had previously. This has a very strong vocal feel, with more focus put on her wonderful voice. It feels like she steps out of her shell and is finally free. If this is "The Prelude" to the full album or the Purple St. James experience, I can't wait.  Check it out, and let us know what you think.

A Concert You Don't Want To Miss.

If you're in the D.C. area, that is. Yahzarah and The Foreign Exchange? You can't go wrong with that.

A Recommendation: The Foreign Exchange- Leave It All Behind.

Even though this is an album from a hip-hop group, I'm recommending it anyway because there is WAY more singing than rhyming on it. This album features many soul artists including Darien Brockington, Muhsinah, and YahZarah. A few of my favorite tracks are "Daykeeper", "If She Breaks Your Heart", "If This Is Love",and "Something to Behold." Leave It All Behind is a must listen. Download or purchase (I prefer the latter!) it whenever you get a chance.

Audio: YahZarah & Raheem Davaughn- Come 2 Me

Here's a track that will be on an upcoming mixtape, Miles Remixed, by producer Apple Juice Kid. Download it HERE. The mixtape will include a bunch of remixes of Miles Davis' older songs. Look out for the tape on OkayPlayer on Monday.

Yahzarah's beautiful voice plus Raheem's beautiful voice equals perfection. Props to OKP for this find.

Can A Sista Rock A Mic Concerts

Saw this series of concerts posted on a few other blogs, and felt the need to share here.  Looks like a great line up playing this month in DC and MD area.  Enjoy.

Yahzarah - Hear Me(2006)

YahZarah broke into the music industry alongside Erykah Badu, whom she sung backup for on Mama's Gun, and in turn established herself as a solo artist in a similar vein, releasing a couple independent albums during the early 2000s. Born Dana Williams in Washington, D.C., YahZarah (whose name loosely means "Queen Mother is the brightest star" -- itself a tribute to her deceased grandmother from Ghana) was greatly influenced as a child by soul greats like Tina Turner, Prince, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, and Minnie Riperton, as well as the music of the church. She went on to study music at both the Duke Ellington School of Music and North Carolina Central University, and got her break into the industry alongside Badu, who featured Williams on the Mama's Gun album and tour. Following this experience, Williams took on the YahZarah moniker and went solo, releasing a pair of underground albums: Hear Me (released by Keo Music) and Blackstar (Three Keys). As a performer, she's shared the stage with such prominent artists as Stevie Wonder and Anita Baker, and she's opened shows for many more, including Earth, Wind & Fire, Musiq Soulchild, Floetry, Rahsann Paterson, and R. Kelly.
